Logan understands that we have a storage unit. It took a while for him to understand that we weren’t giving things away but that we were just storing it. One of the things we placed in the storage unit is a blow up swimming pool. We needed to explain to Logan that the storage unit is for things we do not need right now and or for things we do not use every day, but things that we will use in the future. For example his swimming pool: we cannot use it right now, because it is winter and too cold to swim.
He does understands that this means as soon as it is summer we will go and fetch the swimming pool.
However, what he does not understand, is the concept of time. He realises that is it becoming warmer – of course with exception of today (probably more this entre week). He understands the concept of seasons. Yet for him, because it is starting to feel like summer and it is also time to fetch the swimming pool.
I have done one or two things to facilitate the countdown to summer: Thing One and this was fairly easy, is to use my birthday as a milestone. My birthday is on the 31st of August, which marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. So I told Logan that it is first going to be Mom’s birthday and after my birthday it will be the beginning of summer. Thing Two, was to make him aware that he will need to start wearing shorts* over the weekends during the day when it is a bit warmer.
- We have a storage unit
- We are counting down to Summer
- Which happens to be close to Mom’s birthday
- We thinking of Mom’s birthday a lot.
- Especially Mom!
* Logan use to battle a hell of a lot with the transition between winter and summer. He refused to wear shorts to school and he refused to take off his jumper in the afternoons, even thought the sweat would drip off him!
